- Probably the worst part of the Phuket Tsunami was the Tsunami Patong beach and the biggest damage was done by the Khao Lak Tsunami.

Somehow luckily the Tsunami wave hit Phuket beaches in the morning when there haven't been many people at the beach. On the other hand at that time it was probably the worst time for the Khao Lak Tsunami since the people just had breakfast at the beach resorts when the wave hit and after only the skeleton of the hotels were left. The Tsunami wave was a real disaster for everyone at the west coast of southern Thailand.

Causes of Tsunami where earthquakes off the northern Indonesian island. Tsunami facts are that the disaster could have been much less when some people of the Thai geological service would have taken the warnings from the USGS serious. The same day they had a conference at Hua Hin, a beach town 200km southwest of Bangkok and they have been informed that there was an earthquake and the risk of a Tsunami wave but they didn't issue any Tsunami warning, when asked afterwards why they didn't issue a warning the answer was.. imagine what the people would talk about us when we issue a warning and there is maybe no Tsunami after!

The worst hit on Thai soil was Khao Lak and even about a year after the Tsunami struck Khao Lak was still somehow in a state of shock, everything looked just the same as immediately after the Tsunami. The worst hit places on Phuket were cleaned and restored quickly, also the Phi Phi islands and Trang Thailand. Actually at Phi Phi almost all structures disappeared and only one Phi Phi Beach Resort left. For  Tsunami stories have a look further down.

Khao Lak is a place full of tragic memory, extremely hit by the tsunami and only after about a year reconstruction started. Khao Lak is not a real town but a stretch of tourist facilities along the beach over a couple of kilometers. Now, the area shows a sign of hope. New houses on stilts form new villages for the fishing communities and new boats are parked nearby Before the tourist season revived in late 2005, the fishermen had few customers to sell a catch. So all the hope was centered on the arrival of the tourists, the message was clear ... “tourist come back you all are very welcome” and they came, now at 2011 everything is back to normal.

All this started when a powerful Tsunami earthquake struck the north western part of Indonesia in the morning of the 26.Dec. 2004. The resulting Tsunami smashed into the west coast of Thailand and other countries bordering the Indian Ocean. Patong beach and some more Andaman Sea front areas were badly hit. The worst effected place in Thailand was Khao Lak, a coastal stretch of popular beaches.

- Tsunami stories

How a Phuket vacation of intoxicating blend of sight, sound and scenes turned into disaster or - every paradise has its snakes. This kind of “snake” was an over dimensioned anaconda of violent water. After an exhaustive day, I was sleeping soundly, lost somewhere between

the moon and Phuket. Sometimes after dawn my sleep was interrupted because I felt the bed moving a bit, what was wrong, maybe to much wining and dining last night ? While trying to get my head clear I also noticed the water in the bottle on the night desk swapping back and forward. Since I experienced quite a similar situation many years ago in a hotel in Istanbul, Turkey I was quite sure to experience an earthquake, but since the whole was over within seconds I just turned and kept on sleeping.

Sometime later this morning a sound woke me up, like strong guts of wind and storm raging outside maybe a typhoon, tornado or what ? The sound grew stronger and stronger, abruptly and immediately water seeped into the room, increasing its volume lightning fast until it engulfed the whole area. It was so fierce and forceful I couldn’t open the doors or windows, I was caught inside a hell of water. The dirty brown water quickly filled up the room, only a small space near the ceiling was left so I got some air – sounds like Indiana Jones in real time-. Am I going to be buried in the water grave, were this my last moments? Now a big bang, the door and windows broke open and the water disappeared leaving only some wet dirt behind, it looked like the big Tsunami wave moved on and the pressure from outside disappeared.

Thank good or whoever, I was saved at last, I took a deep breath and tried to get body and soul together. I rushed out of the house just to stumble back, rack and ruin, the disaster and devastation was somehow unthinkable. Dead bodies with partly blue color were around,

two guys came sliding down the palm- tree another one had embraced a palm tree and came through. Most of the people were gone, washed away to somewhere, cars piled up forming a bizarre junk sculpture.

Tsunami disaster
Tsunami disaster at Patong Phuket

People wading through the murky water, trying to find something, but in vain, all gone, sudden, quick and unexpected.

A Tsunami disaster is uncontrollable, the only way to handle this problem is either by a Tsunami warning or to build a strong wall at the coast as it has been done in a Japanese village which had no damages at the last Japanese Tsunami in 2011. Japan has  experience with this.
